Since the 1930’s, the Del Mar Fairgrounds have been a popular attraction for San Diego residents and visitors alike. For this reason, nearby Del Mar Fairgrounds hotels and Del Mar Race Track hotels often fill up fast during the fair and racing seasons, which is why it makes sense to book in advance.
When the land on which the fairgrounds and racetrack were built was purchased, the idea was to host large county fair funded by the proceeds from the adjacent racetrack. The racetrack, funded and patronized by many leading celebrities of the day, including Bing Crosby, hosted several famous races, including the legendary match between Seabiscuit and Ligarotti in 1938. Hotels near the Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack were often full, and many new hotels were also built during this time period to help meet the growing demand.
As the popularity of the racetrack grew, and what had once been a small, localized agricultural fair grew and expanded, race fans were naturally drawn to the fair, and vice versa. Today, the Del Mar fairgrounds hosts four large- scale events, including the San Diego County Fair, in addition to many smaller events as well.
During your stay at the Hampton Inn San Diego/Del Mar, be sure to visit the Del Mar Fairgrounds and the Del Mar Race Track to experience the fun and excitement for yourself.
